Jibal al-Hijab

Jibal al-Hijab جبال الحجاب (Mountains of the Hijab) is a feminist design collection that advocates standing against Islamophobia, and reminds us of the women underneath the cloth.

People who feel negative emotions when seeing the hijab often focus on the cloth and forget the women wearing it — women with hopes, passions, and fears. There is beauty, depth, and weight that comes with the decision of wearing the hijab, and only one thing is required from the other side - empathy.

This design was created with the intention to symbolise the invisible burdens that women who wear the hijab may go through, one of them being Islamophobia. For dkrayatna, the mountains symbolise layers shaped by prejudice, fear, exclusion, violence, discrimination, and hate.

Through this design collection, we encourage the dismantling of prejudices, finding beauty in the unknown, and leading with curiosity and empathy instead of fear.

"There is beauty, depth, and weight that comes with the decision of wearing the hijab, and only one thing is required from the other side - empathy."

The second design from our Jibal al-Hijab (Mountains of the Hijab) collection is a tatreez (Palestinian embroidery) design. The upper motif is a mountain motif design from Hebron, based on an illustration by Tirazain, and the lower motif is a hijab-inspired motif design created by dkrayatna. Together, these two motifs form the Jibal al-Hijab tatreez motif.
